Mayotte Island Quick Facts:

Mayotte Island

Mayotte is a tropical island territory located in the northern Mozambique Channel between Madagascar and Mozambique. Although geographically part of the Comoros archipelago, Mayotte is an overseas department and region of France, making it part of both France and the European Union.

Mayotte covers approximately 374 square kilometers and consists primarily of two main islands, Grande-Terre (Mahoré) and Petite-Terre (Pamanzi), along with several smaller islets. Despite its relatively small size, Mayotte possesses some of the most spectacular marine environments in the Indian Ocean.

The capital and largest city is Mamoudzou, located on Grande-Terre. Mamoudzou serves as the administrative, commercial, and cultural center of the territory.

Mayotte has a population of approximately 330,000 people and is one of the fastest-growing territories under French administration. French is the official language, while Shimaore and Kibushi are widely spoken local languages. As part of France, Mayotte uses the euro (EUR) as its official currency.

The island became a French possession in 1841 and remained under French administration when the rest of the Comoros archipelago moved toward independence in the 1970s. Following several referendums, Mayotte chose to remain part of France and officially became an overseas department in 2011.

One of Mayotte's most remarkable features is its enormous lagoon, which is among the largest enclosed lagoons in the world. Protected by a nearly continuous coral reef stretching more than 150 kilometers, the lagoon covers approximately 1,500 square kilometers and provides exceptional opportunities for snorkeling, diving, and marine exploration.

The waters surrounding Mayotte are home to a rich variety of marine life, including dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays, dugongs, and humpback whales. Whale watching is particularly popular during migration season, when humpback whales arrive to breed and give birth in the warm protected waters.

Nature enthusiasts are drawn to Mayotte Marine Natural Park, one of the largest marine protected areas in the world. The park helps preserve coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, and numerous marine species.

Mayotte's landscape is volcanic in origin and features lush hills, tropical forests, mangroves, and beautiful beaches. The highest point on the island is Mount Benara, which rises approximately 660 meters above sea level and offers panoramic views of the surrounding islands and lagoon.

The island's tropical climate provides warm temperatures year-round, with a rainy season typically occurring between November and April and a drier season from May through October.

Agriculture remains important to local communities. Common crops include ylang-ylang, vanilla, coconuts, bananas, cassava, and tropical fruits. Mayotte was once one of the world's leading producers of ylang-ylang, a fragrant flower widely used in perfumes.

Mayotte's culture reflects a fascinating blend of African, Malagasy, Arab, and French influences. Traditional music, dance, and festivals remain important aspects of island life, while French institutions and infrastructure connect Mayotte closely to mainland France.

Local cuisine features seafood, rice, coconut, tropical fruits, and spices. Popular dishes often combine African and Indian Ocean flavors, with fresh fish and coconut-based recipes commonly found throughout the islands.

Football is the most popular sport in Mayotte, while traditional water-based activities remain an important part of daily life for many residents.

With its crystal-clear lagoon, abundant marine wildlife, tropical climate, and unique cultural identity, Mayotte offers a distinctive blend of African island life and French administration. Often overlooked by international travelers, it remains one of the Indian Ocean's hidden gems, celebrated for its biodiversity, natural beauty, and extraordinary marine ecosystems.
